Gujarat DGP selection: The government to break set tradition? (UPDATED)

In Gujarat, in the history of the state, no junior officer has been ever made DGP by superseding a senior officer. But this tradition may break this time. However, the incumbent DGPs were given extension. In the past, Shivanand Jha and Ashish Bhatia were given extensions as DGPs. Vikas Sahay, retiring on Monday, got the post due to seniority. Now the officers under consideration include Dr KLN Rao, who is senior-most officer and has stayed away from controversies. He is known for strict policing and jail reforms. GS Malik, who is considered close to the government and said to be experienced in many key roles and may be favoured. Dr Shamsher Singh, who is on deputation with BSF and he previously served well in ACB and Dr Nirja Gotru, who is Known for a clean, no-nonsense image, who is seen as tough and honest officer in the Police administration The other officers in reckoning are Manoj Shashidhar and Manoj Agrawal.
